|
During
Lent, the Corelli Music agency's concert series „Church Holidays in St. Mary's
Land" will present St. Matthew Passion by baroque composer J. V. Meder
(1649-1719), who served as cantor in Tallinn once upon a time and wrote one of
the first German operas also here.
It is one
of the most noteworthy pre-Bach oratorios on the Passion of Christ motif. It is
an interesting fact that the greatest number of such works were written in
former Hanseatic towns on the Baltic Sea, including Tallinn
(31 March) and Tartu
(30 March), both of which will see performances of Meder's Passion.
Performances
of major works in churches around the time of holidays can be one of the purest
expressions of the original message. With contemporary musicians, the concert
series brings the colours and atmosphere of distant ages to modern people -
just as the masters of the era could have been heard the music during their
lifetime in the churches and castles.
