CHRISTMAS MUSIC FESTIVAL “CHURCH HOLIDAYS IN THE LAND OF MARY”

Christmas time with beautiful music in churches and music lounges all over Estonia!

Corelli Music brings joy to its audiences with a Christmas music festival “Church Holidays in the Land of Mary” since the year 2010. The festival lasts throughout the long holiday season from 27th of November until January 9th 2017, starting with the First of Advent in the end of November, through anticipation of Christmas and the festive end of the year concerts, until the Epiphany and the Orthodox Christmas in the beginning of January. The patron of “Church Holidays in the Land of Mary” is the president of the Estonian Council of Churches, Archbishop Emeritus Andres Põder.

The programme of the festival consists of concerts „ICE ORGAN“ on the First of Advent, November 27th in Tallinn; „Awaiting Christmas with Brass“ on the Third of Advent, December 11th in Tallinn; traditional end of the year concerts „MAGNIFICAT“ December 28 th -29th in Tartu and Tallinn; „New Star in the Sky of Classical Music“ January 5th and 9th in Tallinn and Narva. Ulla Krigul (harmonium) and Jaan Sööt from the legendary group Jäääär (guitar and song), early brass music ensemble Clangor Cupri and Ene Salumäe (organ), brilliant soprano Arete Teemets, Corelli Baroque Orchestra, vocal ensemble Eboracum Baroque and conductor Chris Parsons from Great Britain, and six solo singers from the new vocal early music ensemble nju:Est consort – they all offer you great musical experiences for Christmas.

ANTICIPATION OF CHRISTMAS. The third Sunday of Advent

PROGRAMME: "Awaiting Christmas with Brass" - Gabrieli, Speer, Schütz, Rosenmüller, Bach a.o.
PERFORMERS: early brass music ensemble CLANGOR CUPRI:
Indrek Vau, Priit Aimla, Ivar Tillemann, Taavi Kuntu (baroque trumpets), Peeter Margus, Vairis Nartiss (Latvia), Aabi Ausma, Valter Jürgenson (baroque trombones aka sackbuts)
Also participating Ene Salumäe (organ)

Consort music of renaissance and baroque for historical brass instruments and organ is rarely performed. Ensemble consists of best players from Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, National Opera and Latvia and is summoned especially for this concert. They will perform most beautiful early brass music for eight players. One of the supporters of this concert is Josef Klier – a mouthpiece specialist, whose baroque mouthpieces will be tried out during rehearsals and concert.        


MAGNIFICAT. Traditional end of the year concerts

PERFORMERS: Arete Teemets (soprano), vocal ensemble EBORACUM BAROQUE (Great Britain), CORELLI BAROQUE ORCHESTRA on period instruments, conductor Chris Parsons (Great Britain)

The year will end with traditionally radiant large scale works in St. John’s Churches in Tartu and Tallinn, that have captivated its audience for more than 10 years. In lush church acoustics one can enjoy different works by Baroque masters. „Magnificat“ is a song of praise to Christ’s birth and to the Virgin Mary. English and Estonian musicians will play together for the first time and early music department students of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theater will participate as well.

PROGRAMME: “Beatus Erit” – Monteverdi Madrigals from the fourth Book of Madrigals; Orthodox songs by Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky, Chesnokov and Sarti
PERFORMER: New vocal ensemble nju:Est consort, artistic leader Iris Oja (alto)

Already for the third time in a row a new star in the sky of classical music is being introduced at the end of Christmas music festival. The wonderful music of Monteverdi and Orthodox Christmas music will resound in a music salon and in an ancient border fortress, performed by a new vocal ensemble nju:Est consort. One of the best know vocal soloists in Estonia, Iris Oja – former Estonian Philhamornic Chamber Choir singer, choir master of Coro Casa da Musica, a member of Theatre of Voices – has gathered a group of best professional singers: Jaanika Kuusik and Karoliina Kriis (sopranos), Joosep Trumm (tenor), Rainer Vilu (baritone) and Ott Kask (bass).
