In Tallinn, there have always been some lovers and rogueses,
often confronting prevailing convictions. Those who swim against the current
find it easy to fall out with the others who have broken in: the rogues surely
deserved the condemnation from decent citizens but some love stories also
reflect rather inflexible comprehensions on how to avoid social differences in
intimate relationships. And these principle were followed for a long time,
until recently.
In the middle of ancient Tallinn, there is a cozy Toompea
music lounge that is held in former noble house. In the year of Tallinn 2011 -
Capital of Culture, the Toompea music lounge unites old and new, history and
brilliant contemporary creatives - and brings some legends and ways of thinking
from the yore.
When opening the concert season 2011/2012, agency Corelly
Music premieres a new work The Lovers and the Rogues by Estonian
contemporary composer Märt-Matis Lill. It is a secular mystery play, based on
legends from Tallinn, also on real events that have taken place in upper town
or downtown in Tallinn. The Lovers and the Rogues unites literature,
music composition, performing and stage art. It is a chamber work consisting of
several movements - every one of them telling one legend from the history of
Tallinn. The stories take us through many centuries: we start our journey from
legend of the grave of pre-Christian Kalev, we continue with stories from the
ages of many authorities and conquerors, eventually we come to last century.
The work by Märt-Matis Lill (40-45 minutes) will be
performed in second half of the concert. Corelli Consort performs on
instruments which have been used in Tallinn through various times, merging old
sounds to contemporary music. The opening half of the concert includes regular
repertoire by Corelli Consort - works that have been played in these same halls
in Toompea already in time of high baroque by Corelli, J. S. Bach, Meder,
Roman.
The performances included in the program of Tallinn 2011,
European Capital of Culture will be held in most beautiful hall on Toompea -
former Ungern-Sternberg palace, nowadays House of the Estonian Academy of
Sciences (Kohtu 6).
Legends used: The
Founding of Tallinn, Burying Nobleman Thuwe, The Mummy of St Nicholas' Church,
The Devil's Wedding, The Shelter for Shadowdead, The Ghost of Toompea, The
Story of Hermann and Margaret, The Man with a Pince-Nez.
